WELL DONE AND THANKS! To all those that helped out and competed. Despite the windy conditions, and the 1 odd shower of rain many athletes from the local area, as well as other clubs turned up to compete. With the Gold medals running out, due to so many people showing up the day was seen as a great success.

I am sure Keith Palmer is typing up the results right now!

Walking Report

The 2nd of this season's London Inter Club Challenge athletics meetings took place at Ashtons Track, Woodford Bridge on a warm Saturday afternoon, with the 3,000 metes walking race being the curtain raiser.

Southend-on-Sea AC's
CHRIS CATTANO led from start to finish, living up to his billing as the pre-race favourite on a track where he has never been beaten. He broke the tape in 15 minutes and 20 seconds.

In his wake a tight battle ensued for the frame positions between Ilford's OLLY BROWNE and former European Games competitor CARL LAWTON of Belgrave Harriers. Neither was prepared to yield a stride until within 200 metres of the finishing line when Browne raised his game to open up a small but decisive lead to come 2nd in 16.36 with Lawton 3rd in 16.41.

Also walked : 4th Dave Sharpe 17.36
6th Alan O'Rawe 18.53 (former member of Southend AC)
11th Bill Sutherland 22.20

First matches of the season: SWL
SOUTHEND’S WOMEN back in Southern Women’s League. Southend’s Senior Women’s section made their first foray into the Women’s League for the first time since 2006 when they were forced to withdraw for the lack of a team.

This year, in the relatively new Senior Division 2, nine members of the Club’s Women’s section travelled to Crawley for the first of the season’s fixtures, in a double event with the Premier Division, and declared themselves pleased with their third place.   With key members of the squad absent mainly through work or injury, the small deficit of 16 points behind Maidstone & Medway would easily have disappeared with the full squad – and who knows, we might even have beaten Havering!

The 7 ½ laps of the 3000m was led from the gun by Danielle Hurley who was never headed, even by the athletes in the Premier Division race which ran simultaneously with Division 2.  Gradually extending her lead lap-by-lap, she produced a best-ever run of 10,54.2 while Sarah Jeffery found 11,57.5 sufficient to win the B string.   Barely an hour later, Danielle ran a 1500m – the time of 5,18.7 was a mere one second outside her best.  Kerry Holland, in her first 1500m track race, won the B string with 5,26.4.

With no B String, Emily Burgess was left to lead the 800m runners home – in a best ever run of 2,24.8.

The 400m is a hard event – as Emily and Kerry discovered in their first outing over the distance with resulting times of 66.8 and 71.2.

Red vests were to the fore in the 200m as well, when Flo Marriner and Felicity Clarke, now an U17, were double winners with 27.9 and 28.3 respectively.  Felicity and Kerry both undertook the Javelin for points and both finished 3rd.

Dani French and Jenna Longhurst, also in their inaugural competition in this League, covered a range of events during the afternoon, Dani collecting a 1st in the B string Long Jump (3.90m), behind Jenna’s 4.51m, a 1st in the B string Triple Jump (8.35m) behind Jenna’s 9.45m and a 3rd in the 100m Hurdles.

Team Manager June Cork declared herself very pleased with the team spirit and with the final result.

FIRST UKA MEETING HAS BEEN POSTPONED
The first UKA meeting has been postponed - and put forward 2 weeks.
The original date for the meeting was:
                 - Sunday 4th May - Mile End, London

The new date for the meeting is:
             - Sunday 18th May - Mile End, London

The change of the date is due to the first day of the Essex County Championships on bank holiday Monday - the lack of athletes competing in the UKA match would be too small to run the match.

Chelmsford Warm up

This weekend saw quite a few athletes from Southend take part in one of the first 2008 track meetings. Chelmsford Athletic Club organised their meeting today, with a big turn out in athletes despite the freezing temperatures of around -1°C, the snow, and the strong winds.
Please send in any photos or results that you would like to see on the site

RESULTS OF THE BOXING DAY HANDICAP PIER RACE 2007

Before the results we should, once again, thank Vice President Tony Bullock and his wife Marion who sponsor the Pier race each year, and Mike Seaman who organises the handicapping – an incredibly difficult task. Thank you also to the Timekeepers and Recorders who turn out to support the event.

This saw only 22 members taking part in our annual event on Southend’s world-famous structure. To some extent, this mirrors the turnouts in the autumn’s cross country and road events which were similarly smaller than for quite a few years.

The first three runners to finish were all making their debut on the boards and had joined the club earlier in the year:  consequently they were on a beginners’ rather steep learning curve which makes them rather difficult to handicap fairly on the basis of cross country events over a variety of courses and odd distances.

First home was Jessica Mead, an under 13 girl, who had a lead of 26 seconds over Kerry Holland, an under 2 Woman, who in turn was 12 seconds ahead of Fiona Hawkins (Veteran) with Kyle Aldridge (under 17 Man) only one second later.  Kyle’s actual time of 13m 56s shows an improvement of two minutes (give or take a second) over his winning time in 2005 which in turn was over two minutes faster than his debut run as an under 13 the previous year: this represents a rate of improvement which is more than twice the long-term rate for boys of that age.

Camilla Smee was again the fastest female with a time of 14m 6s, while veteran Chris Cattano was the fastest male with 12m 43s in his debut run on the Pier.

We are pleased to report that Sarah Jeffery, who slipped at start and hurt her back, has suffered no lasting damage and is back in training and racing.

Finally...the club has a website
Tuesday 11th March saw the club website up and running, with flyers being distributed at training to everyone!! The idea of the website was only brought up at the beginning of this year, and was proposed at the clubs AGM. From then, weeks later the site was up and running with a massive success in visitors (from which crashed the site meter!!) If you would like anything on the website then PLEASE contact the webmaster.
