Essex Cross Country League R2 Home Match Success

Building on their exciting start to this season’s League series, the youngsters of Southend took it upon themselves to repeat their successful outing at the Loughton event last month with three individual wins and 3 team wins.

Rob Frith led the Under 13 Boys home to their second win of the season, although the finishing order was a little different: Dan Gevaux ran like the wind and posed the greatest threat to Frith with just 9 seconds’ gap at the funnel (12:14 to 12:23).   New star of the future Tate Baron, in his first foray finished 6th just 25 seconds later (13:48).  Joe Beard, whilst a little down on his previous performance nevertheless completed the scoring (13:04) with Josh Mann minor hot on his tail (11th with 13:06).  Excellent positions from the supporting squad were produced by Steven Hancock (14th), Philip Bearman (18th), Allen Vermeulen (23rd) and Zach Inwood (37th).  The boys currently have a majority of 23 on the points’ table.

At least the Under 13 Girls produced a scoring side on this occasion and moved up 5 positions on the League standings from 10th to 5thChloe Williams fought a hard finish with two Basildon girls, yielding just 3 and 1 seconds respectively to them to clock 11:29.  Emma Jarvis, the lone runner from the last match finished 29th, Georgina Friswell and Ella Stapleton completed the scoring side in 38th and 41st places.  Friswell and Stapleton, along with Lily Southgate (42nd) and Isobel Hewitt (45th) were making their first cross country appearances for the Seaside club.

It was “ditto” for Ben Austin and the Under 15 team for their Hockley outing: he won again and the team won again.  Ashley Capel improved by one place (9th) on his Loughton appearance, James Blake maintained his position (11th) but Alex Masterson, Jonathan Kerridge and Rhys Gillard put on a superb display of packing (12th, 13th and 15th) while not far behind new signings Sean Butler (18th), Max Knight (23rd) and Richard Stennett (28th) made their presence felt. A good result for the boys, but with the Basildon boys breathing down their necks, they can’t afford to rest on their laurels.

The girls are busy honing their packing skills in the Under 15 event too: the winning squad with a 32 point lead after two races, finished 3rd (Aimee Garnett), 4th (Jessica Mead), 5th (Camilla Smee) and 15th (Jordan Lacey).  Alex Morgan moved up two places from Loughton while Natalie Woodhouse, taking a break from hurdle training, completed the line-up.

Tom Frith made it a family double by winning the Under 17 race with over half a minute to spare on his nearest rival, but despite a reduced score (35 down to 38) they are currently in the lead with the invaluable contributions of George Moxon who ran in 10th followed by David Smale (11th) and Alan Britain who completed the crew in 16th place.

The Under 17 Women turned in a good performance, finishing 2nd team behind Basildon.  This has the makings of exciting development through the season in their attempts to outbid each other for the top spot. (Last time it was 1st Southend, 2nd Basildon).  Emily Burgess led them home in 5th place followed by Kerry Holland in 6th, Danielle Hurley claimed 9th place and Alice Ling in her first race for the team completed the scoring side in 24th.  However, Amelia Kyriakides with her 25th place very nearly made the scoring team instead.  Just four places later Jessica Scott completed the home representation.

With the absence by virtue of varsity pursuits by our top guns (Hickey, Hunter and Smale) as well as Paul Whittaker, the Men’s race was never going to be a top scorer for the seasiders. Those four, together with Howard Clarke (U20) who finished 24th, would have been able to present a healthy challenge to Basildon who rather dominated the proceedings.  Nonetheless there were some good finishes from Steven Whittaker and Roy Scott (28th and 32nd). There was, as ever, a complete cross section of the age groups represented by the Club. Under 20 Josh Crompton was 94th, V60 Peter Binns 96th, V40 Darren Capel completed the scoring team in 100th and 6 places behind him V40 Dave Hurley finished 106th. Continuing the good support from the seniors and vets were Greg Jarvis, Steve Middleton, Jim Longhurst (V50), Mike Stapleton and Matt Gillard and new recruit Stuart Chaplin.   On this occasion, Geoff Smale, unable to do battle with his nemesis Coach Dawson who was busy organizing the event, found himself in the role of Sweeper.

As with the Men, so the Women – with key absences and despite Team Captain Claire Cornwell leading the team home in individual 4th place in a close race which saw the leading four home in little over half a minute of one another, the seaside ladies currently lie in 7th team place. It was an impressively huge field (107) but all the scoring members of the team made it well within the top half of the field – Sarah Jeffery in 22nd, Natasha Lagden 37th and Mel Ling (V45) in 45th..Marion Bullock (V65) once again lent excellent support and saw off challenges from several runners - and all from younger age groups!

Essex Cross Country League 2008/9 - 1st Match - Loughton

The Under 13 Boys comprising individual winner Rob Frith, Joe Beard (4th), Allan Vermeulen, Laurence Willmore (8th) and Zach Inwood;

The Senior Women’s squad of 6 finished in 3rd spot courtesy of fine running from Captain Claire Cornwell (3rd), Marathon girl Lee-Anne Cann making a welcome return to running in 7th, Sarah Jeffery (19th) and Vet Mel Ling in 44th.   Georgina Bullock followed shortly after and it was good to see Super Vet Marion Bullock back on the cross country trail to complete the team.

The Under 13 Girls – the only red vest on display here was that of Emma Jarvis who finished 22nd.

Results of the Senior Men’s/Vet Men’s Team race are not available at this time; however good performances from Paul Whittaker in 3rd, Lloyd Hartman (18th), Howard Clark (21st), Steve Whittaker 43rd, Vets Pete Binns (84th) and Jim Longhurst (105) in a huge field should ensure a good team place.   The Baker’s Dozen squad was completed by Graham Eastty, Dave Hurley, Simon Smale, Mike Fletcher, Matt Gillard, Mike Bailey and Ron Dawson giving a squad with ages ranging from Under 20 to Vet 65.

Embarrassment for the host club

Whilst the picture of a chirpy boy of about 6 years of age running alongside his parent(s) at the start of the recent 10K might have brought tears to the eyes of some, to us, the host club, it created nothing short of horror and we feel it necessary to put right any idea that we were party to this child’s appearance.

The entry form clearly says “The lower age limit for the Fun Run (3000m) is 11 years and for the 10K (is) 15 years (UKA Rules).  The upper age limit for the Fun Run is under 15 years.

PARENTS MUST COUNTERSIGN APPLICATIONS FOR ALL CHILDREN UNDER 16 YEARS OF AGE.

Had an entry been received by the Entries Secretary for a child under 15 the entry would have been rejected and the fee returned.   However, no entry was received which indicated an attempt to race an underage child in the 10K and leads us to conclude that it was a fraudulent entry since the number he was wearing was recorded against an adult male.

We are appalled that the photograph suggests we are complicit in this arrangement.

The UKA very strictly governs the ages of competition for young people in all disciplines throughout the year including Track and Field and Road Races.   As a Club we are obliged to adhere very firmly to these rules.   Apart from overtaxing youngsters, there are also physiological considerations.

Our own Club rules restrict lower age membership to those youngsters who are at the end of year 5, just going into year 6 (11).   Any child younger is referred to the After School Club.   Even when we ran a Junior section ourselves, the age limit was 8 – and those children would most certainly never have undertaken a 10K road run, even as a training session!

We wish to run a safe race, where everyone feels that they have achieved something in one of the only events to be run on a seafront.   We raise a great deal of money for Fair Havens/Little Havens and we would be extremely aggrieved if this race were to be banned after 24 years because we had apparently permitted a child to compete in an adult event.

Medal winners at Essex Champs Day 4 - Garon Pk

By the end of the day the seaside team has collected no fewer than 7 Gold Medals – three relays: the Boys Under 13  4 x 100m (53.2) and 3 x 800m where a nail-biting head-to-head with the Newham & Essex Beagles on the last leg gave Southend the victory (7m31.6) over the London club by just one tenth of a second!  The Boys Under 15 3 x 800m squad earned the 3rd relay Gold in 6m39.2 and four individual successes came in the shape of Veteran Walker Kim Howard, who was defending her title in the 10,000 Walk (70m 58.6s), Under 17 Tom Frith whose 3000m time of 8m 48.2 smashed his life-time best, Under 20 Ben Hunter who beat all the Seniors on the way to his 8m45.2 Gold and Under 15 Ben Austin winning in his first outing this season over the distance with 9m29.3.  The Club’s second Silver was achieved through the nippy efforts (51.9) of the Under 15 Girls sprint relay squad of Sian McCrory, Olivia Law, Leanne McCrory and Ghanelle Edwards.

Sian enjoyed further success by decimating her previous best 300m time with a clocking 43.3s to earn herself the Silver medal. Two Bronze medals brought the Club’s tally for the afternoon to eleven: the Under 17 sprint squad of Eleanor Evans, Felicity Clarke, Alexandra Dean and Amy McDonald who clocked 51.3 and the Under 13 3 x 800m team of Shannon Mackie, Roni Hause and Chloe Williams with the time of 8m15.3.
